Leading the way in sustainable terminal operations

Company Overview

LBCT LLC stands at the forefront of marine terminal innovation, specializing in advanced stevedoring, cargo velocity, and speed to market, while reducing our carbon footprint.

Statement from the CEO

It’s been one year since Long Beach Container Terminal adopted our ambitious plan to eliminate emissions and reduce community impacts by 2030, and we are so excited to share the progress we’ve made over the past fiscal year, July 2022 to July 2023. Over the last twelve months, we’ve secured more than $67 million in federal and state grant funds for 104 pieces of zero-emission, human-operated terminal equipment and more than 100 electric- charging units. We completed an infrastructure design plan to support a 100% zero-emission fleet and ordered three new zero-emission cranes to increase efficiency along our wharf and in our rail yard. We forged new community partnerships and launched an exciting sustainability initiative for LBCT employees. Our emissions continued to decline for the third straight year in a row.

1983

Grand Opening

Long Beach Container Terminal commences operation as a premier terminal. It would long operate as one of the most productive terminals per acre on the west coast.

2011

Initiation of the Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project

The Port of Long Beach commenced the $1.5 billion Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project, aiming to merge two outdated terminals into a single, state-of-the-art, green container terminal. 1000 construction jobs were created every year for the nearly decade-long build process.

2016

Completion of Phase 1

The first phase of the Middle Harbor Project was completed, allowing LBCT to begin operations on an initial 151 acres, marking a significant step toward modernizing terminal operations.

2017

Phase 2 Completion

Phase two of the project was finalized, further expanding the terminal’s capacity and integrating advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact. We now have two berths.

2021

Finalization of the Middle Harbor Terminal

The third and final phase concluded, expanding the terminal to 300 acres with a completed container yard, administration building, and an on-dock rail yard designed to handle 1.1 million TEUs annually, minimizing truck traffic on local roads and freeways. LBCT LLC was acknowledged as one of the world’s most technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable cargo facilities, equipped with nearly all-electric and zero-emissions equipment.

2023

Advancing Toward Net Zero Goals

LBCT LLC made significant progress toward sustainability by pledging to transition the remaining of its cargo-handling equipment to electric, with ongoing efforts to achieve 100% zero-emission operations by 2030. This milestone underscores LBCT’s leadership in green port innovation and commitment to environmental stewardship.
